Tanning Smart
The sun has been revered and worshiped for countless
generations by many ancient and powerful civilizations. The
Egyptians worshiped their sun god Ra, the sun god Surya was
worshiped by Vedic astrology, and the sun god Ah Kinchil
from Mayan mythology. These three ancient civilizations
appreciated and fully understood the way in which the sun is
the source of all life. So this begs the question: why in
recent years have Americans been hiding indoors, covering
themselves with heavy clothing, and generally been avoiding
and fearing the sun?
In recently published articles, most notable of which is Dr.
Holick's book
The UV Advantage,
doctors have been
encouraging Americans to re-think their fear of the sun.
Some say the benefits of the sun have been underplayed.
Sitting in the sun is enjoyable and relaxing; it makes
people feel better and stimulates production of vitamin D.
Doctors recommend 1000 units of vitamin D a day but sources
such as a glass of milk (100 units) and multivitamins (400
units) can only account for so much. Those who get regular
UV exposure, including those who use
indoor tanning
beds have higher vitamin D levels and higher bone density. While
research continues, there is a theory that vitamin D
deficiency is a precursor to other diseases such as: breast
cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and ovarian cancer.
This isn't to say that we should all enjoy the sun with
reckless abandonment. The sun's rays are powerful. If abused,
sunlight can cause severe skin damage or even
skin cancer.
Some anti-tanning lobbyists caution there is no such thing
as safe tanning, while pro-tanning lobbyists suggest indoor
tanning is completely safe – both are wrong. Instead
Americans should practice “Smart Tanning”. Smart tanning,
as defined by the International Smart Tan Network
means respecting both the risks and benefits involved with sun
exposure and making intelligent decisions based on that
information. The best way to reduce risk associated with too
much sunlight, while benefiting from UV's advantage, is to strike
a balance and practice smart tanning. The cardinal rule of
smart tanning is DON'T EVER SUNBURN!
There are countless benefits from regular UV exposure and
it's up to each of us to make personal informed decisions
about how much is too much. Whether practicing
indoor tanning
at a certified tanning salon or
outdoor tanning
at the beach, we can all benefit and enjoy the healthy feeling
we get when looking our personal best.
