Skin Types When Tanning
There are six different skin types, labeled
type 1 through to type 6. The range is from
fairest skinned (type 1) to darkest skinned (type
6). Those who are type 1 and type 2 (very fair
skin) are most susceptible to sun damage and skin
cancer because their skin has difficultly
generating melanin, which protects the skin
against harmful UV radiation.
Understanding your skin type prior to your first
tanning session gives you an idea how sensitive
your skin will be to the UV light. This is
important to know so you don't risk over-exposing
yourself and damaging your skin.
Skin Type 1
I never tan, always burn, and my fair skin is
sensitive to sun exposure. I typically have red or
blond hair and freckles.
Skin Type 2
I tan minimally but burn easily, and am fair
skinned. (typically people of North European
decent)
Skin Type 3
I tan gradually and occasionally burn. (typically
people of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern decent)
Skin Type 4
I tan easily to moderately brown and rarely burn.
(typically people of East Asia, India, or
Pakistani decent)
Skin Type 5
I tan profusely to dark and very rarely burn; I
have medium to dark skin. (typically people of
African, Southeast Asia, India, or Pakistani
decent)
Skin Type 6
I tan darkly and never burn; I have deeply
pigmented skin which is not sensitive to sun
exposure at all. (typically people of African
or (dark-skinned) Asian decent)
