Vitamin D Deficiency
Osteomalacia
Osteomalacia, otherwise known as "softening of the
bones" or adult rickets, is but one serious health
condition which can result from vitamin D
deficiency. This condition may take many months or
even years to develop and just as long to overcome,
provided it's properly diagnosed and treated.
Those most likely at risk for osteomalacia get little
vitamin D
in their diet, and little sunlight exposure. This is
particularly a problem for the elderly, who tend to
get very little sunlight exposure, and those of
African decent, who's super protective skin isn't
efficient at forming vitamin D. Others who may be
at risk are those with digestive disorders such as
crohn's disease or celiac disease.
Early symptoms of osteomalacia can include muscle
aches, chronic fatigue, and feelings of weakness.
Some doctors who treat such patients may
misdiagnose these symptoms for fibromyalgia because
they are unaware such symptoms can result from
vitamin D deficiency. Advanced osteomalacia is
characterized by chronic and severe deep bone pain,
bone tenderness, muscle aches, and a general
feeling of weakness.
Doctors generally treat osteomalacia with
vitamin D
and calcium supplements. This boosts the patients
vitamin D levels quickly, helping the bones
recover. In addition to this treatment some
doctors may prescribe sunlight or
indoor tanning
sessions, enough to achieve an adequate dose of
vitamin D. If you believe you are at risk for
osteomalacia see your doctor, do not attempt to
treat this condition yourself!
In Dr. Holick's book,
The UV Advantage,
he describes in detail the osteomalacia condition
and the effects of vitamin D deficiency.
